Most Sprinkler Failures Come Down to Three Root Causes
In three decades of irrigation work across the North Shore, the vast majority of service calls trace back to one of these three problem categories. Knowing which one you're dealing with is half the diagnosis.
Broken Heads & Clogs
The most common sprinkler failure — and the most visible. Heads get clipped by lawnmowers, stepped on, run over by vehicles, and hit by string trimmers. Others get clogged by mineral buildup or debris from the water source. Symptoms: a geyser where the head should be, a zone that sprays weakly or in the wrong direction, or dry patches downstream of the broken head. Cole replaces heads with same-brand matched units so spray patterns stay consistent across the zone, and we check for underlying causes so the same head doesn't break again next month.
Low Water Pressure
Weak spray, uneven coverage, heads that barely pop up — low pressure has multiple possible causes and each requires a different fix. A partially closed main shutoff valve is the easy case. Leaking underground lines are more expensive. A failing backflow preventer, undersized supply piping, or a valve that's not opening fully all create the same symptom with very different repairs. Cole diagnoses systematically — pressure gauge readings at the source, zone-by-zone flow analysis, and physical inspection where needed — before quoting the fix. A guessed repair is a wasted repair.
Controller & Wiring Issues
The controller is the brain of the system, and modern smart controllers add complexity along with capability. Zones that don't activate on schedule, zones that run when they shouldn't, backup batteries that need replacement, GFCI trips, and wiring faults between the controller and valve boxes are all common. Some issues are trivial (a tripped GFCI, a bad battery). Others require tracing wiring through valve boxes or replacing the controller entirely. Cole troubleshoots electrical issues without automatically assuming full replacement — most controller problems are cheaper to fix than to replace.

Repair Existing Systems, Regardless of Who Installed Them
A significant portion of Cole's repair work is on systems we didn't install — often from companies that are no longer in business, from installers who stopped providing reliable service, or from previous homeowners who left behind a system with no documentation. First-visit inspections identify the system's brand, controller model, zone layout, and any pre-existing issues before repair work begins, so nothing gets misdiagnosed and nothing gets billed twice. If a system is beyond economical repair, we say so honestly rather than nickel-and-diming through visit after visit.
